iPod Rules!

by Wela 27. June 2006 20:41

Not sure what gotten in to me .

Couple of weeks back suddenly I thought of buying an MP3 player. Then decided to go for one with video etc etc. Hungry minds! Then as always it is hit the browser to check for the gadget. Checked many brands and finally got stuck with iPod and Zen players. After comparing things for several days decided to go for an iPod. Features wise Zen player is somewhat ahead for some aspects. But the look and feel of an iPod is unbeatable. Also as a personalization feature they laser engrave your name (or whatever you want) on the back.

There are many devices in the market that are richer than the iPod. But why it stays as the coolest? Well! I think it is because mainly of the elegant look and feel, battery life, user friendliness and of course the quality.

Anyways a friend of mine currently in SG will bring it down soon ... how soon ... I don't know. Until then iPod Rules!

Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel

by Wela 27. June 2006 02:51

Was browsing in the Creative site for some gadgets and came across this interesting dude.

Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel is the best-known professional gamer in the world. In nine years of tournament play, he has captured a First Place finish a staggering 70% of the time. Plus, he has finished in the Top 3 90% of the time. Fatal1ty has traveled the globe to compete against the best in the world, winning prizes and acclaim wherever he goes.

"In competition, you need to focus on the game itself and have no time to worry about your equipment. That's why every feature of the Creative Fatal1ty 1010 Mouse has been optimized and approved by me to give you that critical edge against the competition."

"I only put my name on the very best products. If you're a serious gamer, you just have to get one of these!"

On a new machine @ office ...

by Wela 26. June 2006 17:47

Finally managed to switched to the new machine @ office, But not fully ... I was working on both machines for the last two days and now feeling dizzy. Typing in the wrong keyboard, looking at the wrong monitor etc. have to get all my mail accounts transferred. Hell! there is a lot of mail accounts.

Also I have lost most of my cool MSN emoticons. Since there is no direct way to export and import (is there?) I used this tool called MSN Backup, but its a very buggy tool. It could export only some of the settings and emoticons. So if you have any cool emoticons ... send those my way. Thanks :)

btw: new machine is a NEC branded and its super fast. But not even close to my Home PC.

In another 10 years ...

by Wela 26. June 2006 01:47

Hey! have you guys ever thought about what might things would become withing the next 10 years. Well! Every time when I see a new idea, gadget, software or something that is one of the things I think ... what will this become in the next few years to come. Some stuff makes me feels like Boooo!  it is going to be a dead end for that. But some makes me feel like ... 'Jeeze', 'dang! that's awesome', 'wow!', 'unbelievable!', 'now! ... that is an invention' etc etc.

So where would all these take us? Few things/areas which I thought about.

Computers
Now this is something which is really unpredictable to think about. Can't even imagine how computers will be in another 10 years. But I'm sure there will be significant enhancements in processor speed. Few days ago I found that 500 Gig processor is invented. Now that is a unbelievable speed jump compared to the processor speeds we have today. Anyways I think future will be more towards parallel processors. Currently we have dual core and quad core in the market. Soon it will be with many cores. Display will be without a doubt virtual thin air displays. Well! I'm not dreaming because the technology (named heliodisplay) is already available @ IO2Technology. And they are already doing commercial production. For Hard disks future is doubtful. I think hard disks will be an obsolete thing. High speed memories will be the winner. some laptops are already in markets with several gigs of flash ROM memories. Hell! And USB Drives ... About 4 years back I never thought that I'll be carrying a 1 Gig thumb drive around my neck. So without a doubt we'll be able to carry many Gigs or perhaps terabytes in a small thumb drive.

Mobiles
Mobile phones will be a kick ass area. I'm sure we'll have to find a better name for it. Because making phone calls will be just a tiny feature. Phones with 5.x mp digital cameras are already on the coming soon list. I'm sure the cameras will be significantly enhanced in the near future. Phones built in memories will go to many gigs without a doubt. Week or two earlier few card memory manufacturers introduced 2 and 4 gig memory cards. Mobile processor speed will have awesome speed enhancements because now Intel has stepped into the arena. Coolest for mobiles will be keyboard and screens will be old school I guess. Some manufacturers have already applied for patent for the projected virtual keyboard and screen projectors on the phones. It's amazing. How cool it will be when you come to office only with your mobile phone ... place it standing on your desk ... press one button .. and your keyboard is projected on to the table, and a small size (may be 19") screen is projected to the wall. Well! how the hell is a mobile devise going to power up a projector lamp. I think battery life is one biggest areas which many researches are working on, because every mobile device (not only phones) is facing the same problem ... batteries! I think the future will be liquid fuel based batteries/devices which we can refill. Some laptop manufacturers are already working on the release a fuel powered laptop, I herd that it will first hit the market late 2007.

Broadband
Hmm! for those who are in developed countries this doesn't apply, because dudes .. you already have super fast connections. In Sri Lanka I think, I hope things will get better in this and we all will have true high speed broadband connections. All IT guys who are waaaaaaaaiting for current 'slow' broadband to come to your homes .. lets wish for this.

Internet & Blogging
Four years ago there were no such thing called bloggin. But not it has taken the entire flow of information into a new dimension. Who knows what new will come out in the next couple of years. More and more people are moving into rich experience based web applications. I'm doing some R&D work on AJAX/Atlas technologies/tools. It feels awesome.

May be I'm nuts, anyways I'm glad to be born in a cool time like this.

And me ...
Dang! me will be old in 10 years, and also all my buddies.

Bug in Microsoft Notepad

by Wela 15. June 2006 18:10

OMG!

1. Open Notepad
2. Type 'AAAA BBB CCC DDDDD' (or any other 4-3-3-5 letter combination)
3. Save the document, and close notepad
4. Open the saved file

The resulting text has been turned into Unicode - hopefully Microsoft will issue a Critical Security Bulletin for this soon.

Google Spreadsheets

Another wonder of AJAX. Search giant google seems to be preparing for something really big. Couple of days ago I got to know about the Google Spreadsheets Beta and few minutes ago I got the confirmation for my beta request.

Spreadsheets on the web. Hmm! Right at this moment it may not look like much compared to Excel, but all the essential features are there. Size of the sheet is bit small though, currently it is only 20 columns and 100 rows. Not sure whether this can be expanded, but I couldn't find an option to do so. Anyways i'm sure that'll be increased in the future. In time to come when more and more features are added ... hmm! ... i'm going to need some time figure out what will happen ... new wars in software industry might begin with this .

However without a doubt there is a promising future for this web application. Because anybody on any operating system can use this. Also it saves the spreadsheets online.

Hurry up and go get your beta ... it's a limited offer http://spreadsheets.google.com/

I'm feeling like next in the line, Google Word Processing, Google Presentation, Google ..., Google ... Sounds great.

Dang! drilling, hammering ... it's like in a stone factory. Not sure for how many days will this continue. But I'm sure the noises will haunt me even after going home.
